Founded in 2023 by childhood friends, Eric Daigle and John Piersol, The Fragile Few are an indie alt-pop band from Hamilton. Like many of us during COVID, Eric found isolation “challenging” and also difficult to NOT start playing music again. The “healing years”, as he now calls them, led to a flurry of songwriting in the late summer of 2023. John was his only choice as lead guitarist. Not only had they played in a band together in high school, John had been nudging Eric for years to jam again. Colleen is the latest member to enter the collective healing flow-state known as The Fragile Few. Both John and Eric agreed the band would benefit from having a female voice, to balance the overall newwave moodscape. Inspiration is drawn from male/female vocal groups such as The Cocteau Twins, slowdive, and The New Pornographers, but easily extends to imagining Roxy Music meshed with Milky Chance, with tonal and rhythmic nods to The Smiths, Psychedelic Furs, R.E.M., Blur, Elbow, and The National. Colleen provides the perfect counterpoint to Eric’s alt/rock ironic crooning—she is also a formidable guitar player, piano player, and bass player! Her Grateful Dead-influenced harmonies bring an earthy resonance to John’s Stevie Ray Vaughn-esque grunge-era blues palette. In the great colliding confusion that is the 21st Century, we are all in need of some transcendence and inclusion through music—we are all part of the fragile few!
